Changing a culture is hard work and requires teamwork. This means that patients, doctors, and health plans all have to be on the same page. Unfortunately, this will take a long time to occur, and you can’t wait when you’re in pain. That’s why I want to help you get off the sidelines and become actively involved in what needs to happen, now! This book is designed to help you acquire the knowledge and insight you need to take charge of your pain and transform your life.
With each personal victory over chronic pain, your individual success becomes much more than a solo flight. You will touch others, hopefully many, and inspire them to get on a similar journey. And soon we will have a nationwide transformation on our hands!

I wish I could give you a single, one-size-fits-all plan, but the truth is that everyone’s pain is different, so everyone’s program is unique. Instead of a preset, 1-2-3 type of program, I’ll describe the various approaches that have helped my patients, then give you a few examples of each, along with some recommendations for learning more. As you work through the different approaches— calming the brain, reframing harmful thoughts, igniting creativity, movement—you’ll find that some of them are instantly comfortable and helpful, while others take some getting used to or may not provide measurable relief right away.
That’s perfectly normal. Just keep moving ahead. Keep your eye on the goal of turning your “pain brain” back into a healthy brain, continue working with the comfortable therapies, and experimenting with the others. With time and patience, you may find that all of the therapies are helpful, or you’ll discover the mix that’s just right for you.
This may seem like a tall order, like everything is being dumped on you when you’re hurting, it’s hard to focus, and you’re depressed, angry or worried about losing your family or your job.
Yes, it is a tall order and it is incredibly unfair that our health system has failed you.
But you can do it. I know you can, because I’ve seen many people, just like you, succeed. They were determined to regain control of their lives—and they did!
Let’s start the journey with a look at chronic pain, what it is, and how it turns a healthy brain into a “pain brain.”
