The final group is Upanisad (literally sitting down near the teacher hence secret/esoteric teachings that are not to be overheard by eavesdroppers ). This is hardly surprising as the divisions between these types of text are far from sharp. Indeed, the final section of the Satapatha Brahmana is called the Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad (generally regarded as the oldest of the Upanisads), and the oldest Upanisads all have pronounced Aranyaka features.1 A reader of the Samhitas and the Upanisads notices a radical shift of emphasis and the introduction of many new concepts in the latter.
