Yoga poses terms on Third is Aranyaka (technically forest books, for use by brahmans who had retired to the forest and who wished to conduct alternative versions of the sacrificial ritual). The final group is Upanisad (literally sitting down near the teacher hence secret/esoteric teachings that are not to be overheard by eavesdroppers ). Some texts employ only a twofold division into Samhita and Brahmana, the latter understood to contain not only the Brahmanas but the Aranyakas and Upanisads as well. This is hardly surprising as the divisions between these types of text are far from sharp. Indeed, the final section of the Satapatha Brahmana is called the Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad (generally regarded as the oldest of the Upanisads), and the oldest Upanisads all have pronounced Aranyaka features.1 A reader of the Samhitas and the Upanisads notices a radical shift of emphasis and the introduction of many new concepts in the latter.
