Yoga how to start on In essence, the Samkhya system describes the nature of existence by postulating that many identical purusas, whose only defining characteristic appears to be that they are conscious, become involved in some way with prakrti, who is not conscious but subject to modification under stimulus and who responds to the presence of purusa by generating the universe in order that purusa may realize that the nature of his involvement with prakrti has no effect upon him whatsoever. In Samkhya, then, there is no need for the postulation of any kind of creator or superintending divinity. It is therefore classed as an atheistic (anaisvarya) system. Samkhya is not, however, without its philosophical difficulties. Karika 63 tells us that prakrti functions for the sake of the release of the purusa, and this is problematic if prakrti is to be regarded as insentient. How could prakrti desire the release of the purusa if she lacks awareness? Sentience would also seem to be a characteristic of prakrti in Karika 61 where, when seen by purusa, she says I have been seen and never again comes into the sight of the purusa. The problem with this is that, according to Karika 66, prakrti and purusa remain in proximity to each other even though no further creation takes place in response to purusa s presence.
