Yoga detox on 26 Yet others are prompted not so much by the individuals having the experiences or the situation in which they find themselves but by a third party. It has already been noted that the Pali Buddhist texts contain many accounts of the Buddha taking people to one side and giving them a talk about dhamma (the teaching or the truth of things).27 As a result of this talk the recipient experiences a mental state that is described in the same terms as are elsewhere used to describe the fourth jhana (Skt. dhyana), the meditative state in which the Buddha obtained the knowledges that freed him from rebirth. This jhana-like experience then gives way to an experience of knowing and seeing that has very similar results: the person becomes either a stream-enterer (who will be reborn no more than seven times), a once-returner, a non-returner or an arahat (liberated here and now). We find, then, that mystical experiences, like trance experiences, are quite varied both in the means of their induction and in their content. When we put the patterns found in the two types of experience side by side the parallels are striking: mystical experiences may be cultivated or spontaneous, trance experiences may be cultivated or spontaneous; mystical experiences may be internally or externally oriented, trance experiences may be internally or externally oriented; mystical experiences may be self-induced or induced by another, trance experiences may be self-induced or induced by another; mystical experiences may be devoid of content or full of vivid, realistic content, trance experiences may be devoid of content or full of vivid, realistic content.
