Relatives danced around the grave and it was then filled, with food placed on it and a fire kept burning for four nights. The fire was to assist the spirit in keeping warm and cooking food additional food placed on the grave was allowed to be taken by the poor, relatives, and friends for their own consumption. The body was generally placed with the feet to the west, the direction of the souls journey. The grave was then covered with bark, cloth, or a small shelter and food placed there periodically, including the first harvests of maple sap and berries.
