Want to Boost Your Health and be Your Happy Weight? It’s Time to Put Pleasure Back on Your Plate

Are you bored with following diets that don’t deliver results? Or constantly worrying about which foods it’s ‘OK’ to eat? Has healthy eating become a burden rather than a blessing?

According to naturopath Lee Holmes, author of new book Supercharge Your Life (Murdoch Books, £14.99), the modern-day pursuit of perfection is leading to a damaging ‘immortality complex’ – a belief that nothing will harm us if we eat certain wonder foods and avoid other ingredients. ‘In this era of clean eating, kale-smoothie obsession, we’ve lost our pure enjoyment of food,’ says the Australian holistic nutritionist, wholefoods chef and yoga teacher.

We choose our food from a place of fear, rather than one of freedom – we become afraid of not just food, but our appetite and of enjoying our food. We’ve become so afraid of gluten, sugar, fructose, dairy, meat, unfiltered water and grains, that many of us have eliminated them from our diet with no balance or moderation.

THE JOY OF EATING

Eating from a place of fear doesn’t just deprive you of happiness, says Holmes. Science is proving that your mind and thinking can even affect the way your physical body functions and absorbs nutrients. ‘Vitamin P (pleasure) is a vital factor in making our meals nutritionally complete,’ she says. ‘When we’re turned on by our food, we turn on our metabolism. If you’re experiencing a limited sense of enjoyment when eating your food, you might not be receiving the nutritional benefits you really crave.’
