Is there a reason I get a stomach ache when I eat pears?
If could be that you’re sensitive to excess fructose – the predominant sugar in pears. Fructose is a fermentable carbohydrate or FODMAP and most people will react badly to it if they consume too much, but a few people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) will have stomach problems such as bloating, pain, wind and diarrhoea with even just a small amount of the fruit. Pears also contain sorbitol, which can add to stomach problems as it’s fermented by gut bacteria, too.
