• The pain starts out dull, but may become sharp as damage increases.

• In the beginning stages, most runners experience minimal pain. If ignored, the injury can progress and force one to limp.

• If there is pain is on the knob of bone at the hip, it may be sharply painful from the beginning. This can become a long-term injury and should be treated immediately.

• It will often hurt after sitting when the leg is raised and the hip is flexed.

• Sometimes the pain occurs suddenly due to an unexpected motion like tripping. It is common in other sports with fast lateral movements. It can easily be injured in stretching or other exercises including weight lifting (often due initially to over stretching the hip). These rapid onset Yoga Injuries may be quite painful. If experiencing serious pain, see a doctor.

• Three hip flexor muscles are primarily responsible for moving the thigh upward and help initiate the pull of the leg forward when it is fully extended to the rear.

• The rectus femoris is a quadriceps muscle from the front of the thigh that attaches to the bone at the hip in front. Injury to this muscle causes pain at the upper portion of the thigh and is one of two primary muscles causing pain near the bone on the front of the hip. The sartorius is connected to the bump itself and wraps to the inside of the thigh. Sartorius is not one of the primary hip flexors but is affected by the way the hip extends and flexes.

• There are two muscles that originate at the front of the lower back and deep in the pelvis. These are the iliacus and the psoas major. They are sometimes called the iliopsoas. They travel down and forward to attach to the hipbone on the inner and back just below the hip joint. Because they wrap around the bone, they also rotate the thigh outward as they lift it upward.
