When the sun is shining and the daysare long, it’s easy to exercise outside but al fresco activity can do more for you than simply boost your motivation. Scientists have long known that ‘greenexercise’ is a boon to the body, andthey’re only just starting to discover whata blessing it is for the mind. Data showsthat just five minutes of exercise outdoorscan boost mood and self-esteem. Plus,2014 research from Coventry Universityshows that getting active among nature isgood for the kids’ health too, lowering theirblood pressure. To encourage more of us to hit the greengym, Merrell has partnered with Our Parksto launch a free six-week outdoor fitnessplan as part of its Nature’s Gym campaign. The fitness classes will be taking place inLondon parks (ourparks.org.uk) throughoutthe summer. Need a push in the rightdirection? I asked expert Dr Andrew Murrayhow to prep for an outdoor workout:
1. Embrace the elements. Poor weather isoften used as an excuse not to exerciseoutside, but different temperatures arereally good for the body. Remember thatwhen the thermometer dips.
2. Stay safe. Let someone know whereyou’re going and how long you intend tobe. Stay in safe, well-lit areas when it’s darkand have an easy way of getting home.
3. Dress for the occasion. Wearing the rightgear – moisture-wicking tops, stretchyshorts, supportive, grippy trainers – willequip you for the moves and terrain.
