‘I won’t let my illness get in the way of my achievements’
Sophie Holmes, 24, is exceeding her fitness aspirations, despite a debilitating lung condition
I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when I was four months old, after being born 10 weeks’ premature. Growing up, I was on loads of medication and had to have regular physiotherapy, but I felt like a normal person and did a lot of fitness and sports. For me, fitness was key When I was four months old, my parents had been told by doctors that I might not make it to my teens, but when I got to that age. I felt fitter than most of my friends. The doctors said, “Wow, we’re not sure what you’re doing, but it’s obviously working!’
‘When I was 19 years old, I became unwell and went through a stressful period in my life. My lungs were working at 50 percent capacity. Doctors didn’t know what to do, but as I sat there in hospital, I knew I wanted to get fit and become a personal trainer. It took a couple of years, but I’m now qualified. A lot of my clients have no idea about my condition. I’ve also been ambassador for That Girl London 2015 (thatgirllondon.com), with its online nutrition plans and high-intensity workouts.’
THE BIG CHALLENGE
‘At the end of October, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro- the second female ever with cystic fibrosis to do so. Everyone thought I was going to make myself ill, but I had one doctor back me and provide support for the 18 months leading up to my climb, and I had regular hospital visits alongside training. It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but I was the only one unaffected by the altitude!’
Fitness For Aspirations, Despite A Debilitating Lung Condition Photo Gallery
Part of the reason I decided to go on social media im sophie holmes) was because I wanted to give others hope. I also wanted to break the associations that often come with cystic fibrosis, by showing you can do what you want and live with what you’ve got. Just work hard and keep your head up. Even though the condition will hold me back, it’s also pushing me to do so many amazing things, and I want to inspire others to know they can do the same.’
I have to eat 3,000 calories a day via six meals – lots of vegetables, protein, nuts and rice. I also take 70 tablets a day. but I forget I have cystic fibrosis because I’m just running around doing whatever I want to do. Even if I do get ill again. I’ll be positive. I really want to live as long as I can. It’s made me the person I am so, in a weird way, m thankful for it. I believe it’s mind over matter. Regardless of whether I’ve had a bad day, as long as I’ve got a good head on my shoulders, everything comes out on top.’
