The following races are around four weeks away, and there are plenty of options for newbies!

SILVA 10 TRAIL SERIES SATURDAY, FEB 1

KNEBWoRTH PARK JOG SUNDAY, FEB 23

If a winter race doesn’t seem complete without masses of mud, this is the one for you. Held in the historic grounds of Knebworth house, the 5K or 10K event takes racers cross country through mudgrass and along tracks. Expect to slip and slide while having plenty of fun.bhf.org

GARMIN RACE YOUR PACE SATURDAY, FEB 15

Signed up for a spring marathon? You need to do this event! The Race Your Pace Half marathon is less about competing and more about learning how to pace yourself, which smart runners know is essential for distance races. Simply sign up and follow the 6. 7, 8. 9,10, 11 or 12- mins-per-mile pacer.

GLOW IN THE PARK FRIDAY, FEB 19

If you want to keep training through the winter months, you need to learn how to run in the dark. Enter the Glow in the Park Kand 10K series. These family-friendly events take place at 7;30pm during the evening in parklands across the country through February and March.glowinthepark.co.uk

ASICS GREATER MANCHESTER MARATHON SUNDAY, APRIL 6

If you’re a long-distance roadie looking for a new marathon event, ta dah!We’ve found the perfect race. The Greater Manchester Marathon boasts the flattest courses in the UK, making it PB territory for endurance runners. Not ready for 26.2? NIKE WOMEN’S 1 OK WE OWN THE NIGHT SATURDAY, MAY 10

This popular after-hours 10K event is back! Boasting a field of around 4,000 runners in 2013, the London 10K is flat, fun and friendly. Expect a buzzing atmosphere, some stylish runners, energising tunes, a few celebs (Paula Radcliffe and Perri Shakes-Drayton were spotted at the 2013 event) and a lot of girl power!nike.com/gb

CONTI LIGHTNING RUN SUNDAY, MAY 4

Running 10K off-road sounds easy, right? Sure, if you’re doing it once. If. however, you’ve entered this 12-hour relay at Catton Park in Derbyshire, you can expect to run the same 10K route several times over. Race it solo, in a pair or with a team of five for 12 hours continuously. Those who clock the most laps win – easy! Actually, no it’s not – it’s hilly and hard.

KAMIKAZE PIPING FORD SUNDAY, MAY 18

THE WALL SATURDAY, JUNE 21

Some people look at Hadrian’s Wall, others walk alongside it, but truly hardy types sign up for this ultra-distance event and run the length of it. Tackle this 69-mile challenge as a team, pair or solo over two days, or be really brave and do the whole thing alone or with a friend in one day. Impressive, eh? ratracethewall.com

ENDURANCELIFE CTS ULTRA SUNDAY, MAY 25

OK, you caught us – we told a porky! You only have four months to get fit for this event – but it’s worth it. The CTS (Coastal Trail Series) is touted as the hardest trail series in the UK. Events take place from until May, along iconic coastlines, and you can sign up for a 10K, half marathon, marathon or ultra-distance race at this final meet on the South Devon coast.

ATLANTIC COAST CHALLENGE OCTOBER 3-5

If one marathon isn’t enough, why not do three, over three days, against the elements? That’s what Atlantic Coast challengers will be doing. Starting in Padstow and finishing at Land’s End, this event sends racers across 78.6 miles of wild and windy coastline. Walk, crawl or run the race and then brag about it forever. votwo.co.uk
