Claire Newton, 51, is a Durban-based psychologist who has never been married. I know that I’m still single because I’m not prepared to settle for a less-than perfect partner. Until then, I’ll continue to be a happily single, strong, and independent woman.

Right now I’m not actively looking for a husband, but if Mr Perfectly Amazing happens to cross my path, I would be happy to get involved in a relationship. I want a partner who isn’t intimidated by my intelligence; I was once told by a man that I’d never marry because I won’t ‘dumb myself down’ – and that’s something I’m just not prepared to ever do. My ideal partner would have a degree because it shows that he’s academically inclined, and an interest in the arts would be a welcome bonus because he’ll need to enjoy attending the ballet, symphony concerts and theatre with me. Men with a high EQ grab my attention, too; a man is in tune with his own emotions and those of the people around him, and he must be able to talk about them easily and clearly. I’m looking for someone who has an assertive communication style but who isn’t aggressive, submissive, or manipulative.
