Cover star Jamie-Lee on her love of Joburg sunsets, yoga, and growing up on a farm
J amie-Lee Aldous, 27, grew up in a small farming community in KwaZulu-Natal, before moving to Cape Town to study. She now lives in Parkhurst, Joburg, with her boyfriend, Jason, and is a yoga instructor. I grew up in a small KZN farming town called Underberg, and I’m still a farm girl at heart. Some of my family still lives there, and growing up in the area has given me a lifelong love of the outdoors. I enjoy hiking, trail running and camping – anything that gets me outside makes me happy. I believe sunshine and fresh air are the best therapy.

I have a real soft spot for animals. Throughout my childhood on the farm I’d take in any strays I could find, including what I thought was a sweet, injured little field mouse. It recovered and turned out to be a rat – it then escaped and made a home for itself in my mom’s pantry! I lived in Cape Town for years, but relocated to Johannesburg last year. The city already feels like home, even though I’ve only been here for under a year; the sunsets are nothing short of magical – it’s one of the things that I’ll never tire of.
I also love Joburg’s energy; it always feels so alive and makes me believe that anything is possible. If I could choose a superpower I’d want to be able to teleport. My parents live in Tanzania, and in 2017 I’m hoping to spend time with them. Despite the distance, we talk on Facetime every day – can you just imagine my data bill! I initially took up yoga for exercise, but it became more than that. Yoga has calmed me; it has had such a positive impact on my life that I wanted to share that with others, so I trained to become an instructor. I love that yoga isn’t about looking skinny; it’s about being mindful, strong and centred.
