KRISHNAMACHARYA Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) lived a life made extraordinary by the combination of two qualities that are only rarely found in a single person: a profound traditionalism and a radical creativity. He was also instructed in asanas (postures) at the Advaita Vedanta Math at Sringeri by Narasimha Bharati Swamigalavaroo.15 After three years in Varanasi (Benares), where he deepened his knowledge of the classic brahmanic curriculum (1906-9), he returned to Mysore in order to study the texts of Sri Vaisnavism and gain qualifications in the study of the Vedas and of the Mimamsa.
