Do you swear by your heart rate (HR) watch stats during workouts? According to research from St Mary’s University, London, wrist-based devices may not track your ticker as accurately as other monitors. The scientists got exercisers to cycle at an increasing intensity for 15 minutes while monitoring HR with different devices – several popular HR watches, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and a chest strap HR monitor. Results show the watches didn’t produce as accurate an HR reading as the more traditional devices. Our thoughts: HR watches are great for convenience, but be aware of their limitations.
